What is interpreting?

By "interpreting" we mean the translation of a spoken text presented once (usually orally) from a source language into a spoken text in a target language.

    Interpreting

  • Conference interpreting
  • As the name suggests, this type of interpreting is used at conferences. In order to become a conference interpreter, you need special training, which I completed at the University of Applied Languages -SDI Munich. It was there that I learned various techniques, including simultaneous and consecutive interpreting, and acquired the ability to organize interpreting teams and the necessary technical equipment.

  • Simultaneous interpreting
  • This type of interpreting takes place at the same time as the speaker is speaking and requires technical equipment (a speaker with a microphone, an interpreter with headphones and a microphone in a booth, and a listener with headphones). If you do not have the technology yourself, I can organize it for you.

  • Consecutive interpreting
  • Consecutive interpreting means interpreting with a time lag. The interpreter listens to the speaker for a period of time, takes notes if necessary and reproduces what has been said in the target language when the speaker has finished speaking.

  • Liaison and negotiation interpreting
  • Liaison and negotiation interpreting is characterized by a rapid change of speaker. If two (or more) people wish to communicate but they do not speak the same language, an interpreter is called in to interpret either simultaneously or with a time lag.

  • Other types of interpreting
  • Certified interpreting
  • On some occasions, such as at court hearings or weddings as well as in other situations, the interpreter has to be certified. This means that the interpreter has passed a state examination and has been sworn in or authorized by the president of the regional court. And of course I have this qualification too.

  • Chuchotage (whispered interpreting)
  • Whispered interpreting is a subtype of simultaneous interpreting. While the speaker is talking, the interpreter whispers the oral translation in the target language either into the listener's ear or via whispering equipment using headphones and a microphone. Whispered interpreting is often used in court hearings or during factory visits. If you do not have any whispering equipment yourself, I can organize it for you.

  • Interpreting at trade fairs
  • Are you planning to visit a trade fair or have a booth at a trade fair in a country whose language you do not speak? I will contribute to your success. Through my work as an interpreter, you can communicate with your business partners in other languages. That way your business and negotiations can run smoothly.

  • Escort interpreting
  • In escort interpreting I accompany my listeners on a trip or at an event and interpret in both directions.

  • Community interpreting
  • The term “community interpreting” refers to a form of interpreting that frequently occurs in the health sector and social services. Here, the interpreter not only takes on the role of language mediator but also that of cultural mediator. The interpreter’s task is to translate into the other language and at the same time to communicate any relevant cultural differences and peculiarities, if necessary by explaining them.

  • Sight interpretation
  • This means that a written text is immediately translated orally. This can occur in a variety of situations when a document needs immediate translation but does not require the written form.
